Finding Culture as a New Student

  Finding Culture as a

New Student

                          Connecting Through Diversity

Moving to a new city is always exciting and a little intimidating. When I first moved to Vancouver to
study, I knew I would take some time to settle in and find new people. One thing that I didn’t expect was how much I would learn from exploring the city and talking to people from different cultures.

Like many places in Canada, Vancouver is one of the most multicultural places I have ever been. From the moment I start walking down Robson Street or ride in the SkyTrain, I can hear at least 3 different conversations in different languages. From that moment, I realized I was not only going to learn while studying my degree but also by making genuine connections with people from different cultures.

One of my favourite cultural experiences was visiting Richmond Night Market. This place offers diversity in street food from many places around the world, inspired primarily by East and Southeast Asian cuisine. This place has lots to offer, from delicious food to try to vibrant sounds showing you a little more about their culture.
On weekends, I also like to explore Granville Island’s public market. A beautiful place where you can find local artists, musicians and fresh local food.

You know what is the best part? Vancouver is a great city that you can enjoy on a student budget. From free outdoor activities like the fireworks show and movie at Stanley Park to accessible hiking trails near Grouse Mountain or North Vancouver. There is always something happening, especially during summer. Not to mention, the museums and galleries that offer student discounts occasionally, to promote art in the city.

I feel that Vancouver is one of the greatest cities to live in nowadays; it has taught me how to feel comfortable being different. You will never be “too new” or “too different” here. Everyone has different backgrounds and different reasons to be here; we are all on our personal journey, and it feels special to be sharing a common space like this city has to offer.

If you are new to Vancouver, my advice is simple. Open yourself to new experiences and learn from new cultures. Globalization is a beautiful opportunity to grow personally and professionally.
