Staying Safe in Vancouver: What New Students Should Know
Vancouver is one of the safest big cities in Canada but like any city, stuff can still happen—so it’s smart to know a few basic safety tips. If you’re new to the city (or thinking about moving here), here’s what you should actually keep in mind:
1. Watch Your Stuff
On campus or around the city, don’t leave your bag, phone, or laptop unattended. Theft is rare but it does happen—especially in busy coffee shops or public transit.
2. Be Smart Late at Night
Downtown Vancouver is super active, but if you’re out late (especially after bars close), stay in groups and stick to well-lit streets. Trust your gut—if something feels off, grab an Uber or take transit home.
3. Use Public Transit Safely
The bus and SkyTrain are safe, even at night. Always tap your Compass Card so you’re covered. If you feel uncomfortable, you can always tell the driver.
4. Know Emergency Numbers
911 works here for any emergency—police, fire, or ambulance. For campus-specific help, save your school’s security number in your phone.
5. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
Don’t walk around staring at your phone with both earbuds in. Vancouver is beautiful—look up, be aware, and you’ll stay safer.
6. Street Smarts in Certain Areas
Most of Vancouver is super safe. But like any city, some areas (like parts of East Hastings) can be rough. You won’t “accidentally” end up there, but just be aware and avoid wandering into unfamiliar neighborhoods at night.

7. Stay Safe in the Outdoors
Vancouver is full of trails, mountains, and beaches. If you go hiking, always tell someone where you’re going and check the weather first. Bring water, proper shoes, and a charged phone—BC nature can surprise you.
Final Tip:
Vancouver is very student-friendly and easy to get around. Just use common sense, stay aware, and don’t be afraid to ask locals or campus staff if you ever feel unsure about something.

Common sense is your best safety tool
